What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a new field of medicine that focuses on finding the root cause of a symptom, syndrome, or disease. In traditional medicine we are taught to educate; however, treatment is often aimed at giving medications to modify the symptoms of the end result of disease. Not enough emphasis is placed on looking for the root causes or imbalances on a cellular level. As a specialist in Functional Medicine I understand the biochemical individuality of each human being based on concepts of genetic and environmental uniqueness’s, and the dynamic balance among the internal and external factors in a patient’s body, mind and spirit. Ultra-advanced testing is available through research centers and specialized laboratories throughout the country. Most of traditional medical centers do not utilize this testing available because it encompasses a different way of looking at and treating root causes. I strive for making people well by addressing these issues, and removing or minimizing the amount of traditional medications that patients need. I address the same medical diagnoses that traditional medicine does, but analyze it more thoroughly and differently. For example, I check vitamin and antioxidant deficiencies; detoxification imbalances; brain chemistry (neurotransmitter levels that control mood, cognition, memory, learning); gut ecology (microorganisms, leakiness, allergy issues, and inflammatory markers); sources of inflammation, sources of toxicity (environmental, and other chemical exposures); nutritional byproducts; and genetics. Once I get a good overview of the core problems, I work on “removing“, “ fixing”, and “repairing“ , according to your specific needs. Included in these approaches is education , nutrition, and other modalities specific to the practitioner. Since I am an osteopathic physician, I also address the musculoskeletal system in a more dynamic and thorough way. I work with any specialists that you might be seeing ie oncologist, rheumatologist, pain specialist to give a more comprehensive definition to your care. I also practice what is called ultra-prevention to look for vitamin, antioxidant, hormonal, and other imbalances that lead to premature aging and pre-disease processes. By focusing on the the disease paradigm from a perspective of restoring function, I hope to give you valuable information and tools toward greater health and healing.

What is a D.O.?
There are only two kinds of physicians qualified to be licensed for the unlimited practice of medicine in all 50 states: those holding the M.D. and those who have earned the D.O., doctor of osteopathic medicine degree.
Osteopathic physicians, like Dr Holec, perform surgery, deliver babies, and prescribe medicine in hospitals and clinics across the nation. Whether they’re the family doctors or specialists, D.O.s use all the tools of modern medicine and more.
They help their patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don’t just fight illness, but prevent it. They give special attention to how the body’s nerves, muscles, bones and organs work together to influence health. And, through osteopathic manipulative treatment, they can use their hands to diagnose injury and illness, and encourage the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
These “extra touches” distinguish the D.O.s whole-person philosophy of medicine. It’s a century-old tradition of caring for people, not just treating the symptoms.
